Portable Locations

Several members enjoy setting up portable stations and have regularly used certain 'preferred' locations. This might be for testing experimental antennas or just spending the day playing radio in the countryside away from electrical noise. If such a station is being organised it will be listed on our events page (or shown in the homepage 'news box'). Visitors are most welcome at these activities.

Clashindarroch Forest

Portable at Clashindarroch

Referred to locally as just Clash this site is good for HF experiments as there is plenty of space for wire antennas in and around the car park. It is not the best VHF/UHF site in the area though.

It is located on the A941 about five miles out of Rhynie heading towards Dufftown. The nearest postcode is AB54 4HP. If you have the 'What Three Words' app on your smartphone then the location can be found from booms.embarks.moon.

Directions coming from Aberdeen: Take the A944 to Alford, follow the signposts for Huntly and further on join the A97. After passing through Lumsden you will reach Rhynie. Turn onto the A941 for Dufftown and reach Clashindarroch after five miles.

The Society is very fortunate to have access to a useful site (the Bull Field) for portable operation on the Dunecht Estate, which is available to members. Please note that if you wish to use this location, a period of notice is required as the Estate office has to be informed in advance of any activities.  Please contact David MM0MVX in the first instance who can supply further information and arrange for the gated access road to be unlocked.

New Slains Castle

This is a prominent ruin dating from the late 1500s on the cliffs near Cruden Bay overlooking the North Sea. Due to its location, it is a good VHF/UHF site. Access is normally restricted to pedestrians only but the owner has kindly agreed to allow Society members vehicular access and to use a parking area adjacent to the castle for portable operation. For further information and to make arrangements for access, please contact Fred GM3ALZ.
